One of the most important areas of website managment is cataloging and resizing your images correctly for use online. In the past we have had to use programmes like Microsoft Photo Editor or even Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop to resize and optimse images that are too big for the Basespace Image uploader. This can occur if you are using a very high resolution digital camera for instance.
Now - with the Basespace image uploader (allows you to crop and optimise an image) and the Microsoft Windows Powertoy Image resizer we can do this very easily and at no cost!
Step 1:
To get started you will need to download the Powertoy from Microsoft's website:
Microsoft Powertoys
Download the Image resizer (link is in the right hand side column). When prompted, select 'Run' and the software will install by itself. When this process completes you are ready to go. You will not see any new programme in your Start menu, but you will see a new option when right-clicking an image file. This is where the Powertoy magic starts.
Step 2:
Simply find the image (or images; select more than one with the ctrl key depressed) and then right click and select 'Resize pictures'. Choose a resolution, we recommend 800 x 600, and then click 'Advanced'. Select the box 'Resize original images (don't create copies) and press Ok. Your images will resize and are now ready for the Basespace image uploader. Simply upload as normal and use the Basespace Image uploader to crop and position your images.
As an alternative you may wish to simply choose the size 800 x 600 and click OK. In this case the Powertoy creates a copy of each resized image. You will need to take the copies and store them in a new folder to keep your images organised.
